Vegetation Management: FortisAlberta's Role

How we keep lines clear

To help reduce safety hazards, outages, wildfires and other risks, vegetation must be kept clear of electricity poles and power lines.

FortisAlberta is responsible for maintaining the required clearances along power lines between poles, while customers are responsible for managing vegetation around the final service line that runs from the pole to their home or business.

Our approach

FortisAlberta uses several proven vegetation management techniques, from tree trimming and selective removals to mowing, mulching and herbicide treatments. These methods help maintain safe clearances while supporting long term system reliability. See how each method works and what you can expect during routine maintenance.

Vegetation clearing done by FortisAlberta contractors is conducted as per our service standards. FortisAlberta is not obligated to assist with trees we deem not a risk to our power lines, and/or have enough clearance based on the Alberta Electrical Utility Code. Our ability to assist is reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Customers share the responsibility to ensure that they maintain vegetation on their property to ensure safety and reliability. Creating defensible spaces and being proactive in FireSmarting is crucial.

Below are examples of the type of work you might be able to expect in the areas we’re responsible for:

Our goal is to maintain to these clearance distance

Note: Clearance standards are ‘ground-to-sky’. Clearances may vary based on tree species.

Storm cleanup

Severe weather can cause trees and branches to fall onto power lines, resulting in power outages. During storm response, our crews focus on restoring electricity safely and quickly. This work may require trimming or removing trees and branches, including those located on private property, when they interfere with electrical equipment. Our efforts are limited to what is necessary to restore service. Once power has been restored, any remaining tree debris is the responsibility of the property owner. Because emergency tree work prioritizes safety and timely restoration, homeowners may have limited input on appearance or other aesthetic considerations.
