Alex, a Power Line Technician (PLT) in Spruce Grove, offers an inside look at the power line trade and provides safety tips for staying warm this winter.

What does your day-to-day work involve?

I’m in operations, so my days involve meeting with customers, responding to outages and removing vegetation around power lines.

What do you like most about your job?

I enjoy being outside every day, the customer interaction, climbing poles and knowing we make a difference by bringing electricity to the people around us. I also like the teamwork aspect.

Is there something that stands out to you during your time with FortisAlberta as a key memory or success?

One of my favourite parts about working here is that we do fundraising events. When I was in Whitecourt we all did a turkey drive, and in Spruce Grove they do a big Christmas fundraiser for families in need.

Now that we’re into winter, what kind of conditions do you deal with on the job?

We deal with icy conditions and some bitter cold days. Whether it’s - 10°C or -45°C in the middle of the night, we do whatever it takes to keep the lights on

Any tips for staying safe and warm?

We for sure wear more layers in the winter. And if we’re going to be active, we layer an appropriate amount so we don’t overheat. We take appropriate breaks to keep our feet and hands warm to avoid frostbite. We always make sure we have good boots and ice cleats. When it’s really cold, we go out in pairs. “I am my brother’s keeper” is a big thing in the power line trade.

When you’re not at work, what might your neighbours find you up to?

I play hockey in a local league, and I’m definitely a big golfer. I enjoy snowboarding and hanging out with my friends and family. I’m lucky I get to work with a lot of my closest friends.
