Public Safety Power Shut-off

It's wildfire season in Alberta

We all know that wildfires are a fact of life in our province. However, in the last few seasons, Alberta has experienced more frequent and intense wildfire events. In Alberta, wildfire season normally runs from March 1 to Oct. 31. This year the provincial government declared the start of the season earlier than usual, recognizing that conditions were already warm, dry, and windy in some areas.

Preparing for a Public Safety Power Shut-off

In our province, there are areas considered at a higher risk of fast-spreading catastrophic wildfires. In extreme cases, the electricity transmission provider, AltaLink, has established a Public Safety Power Shut-off (PSPS) program to be implemented as a last resort measure in times of severe wildfire risk. PSPS is dependent on a variety of factors and if activated, this could result in a temporary shutdown of power to the FortisAlberta system in the affected areas and we ask for people to be prepared for at least 72 hours.

PSPS is a last resort and only used under the most extreme circumstances, although we want you to be prepared.
