Specialized Learning Opportunities
Power Line Technician Apprenticeship Program
FortisAlberta’s Power Line Technicians (PLTs) are responsible for the construction and maintenance of power lines throughout rural
Alberta.
Some typical PLT duties include:
- Building, repairing and maintaining overhead and underground power lines and associated equipment
- Operating large equipment such as cranes, derricks and aerial man lifts
- Responding to customer needs and requirements
How it works
Becoming a PLT requires highly-specialized training. Employees are trained at our state-of-the-art Employee Development Centre (EDC) in
Red Deer, using a program designed to equip our apprentices with the skills they need to support the delivery of reliable power in the safest and most efficient manner possible.
During each of the first three years of the program, apprentices undergo a minimum of 1,525 on-the-job training hours and four to five weeks of technical training and examinations at the EDC facility. In the fourth year, apprentices complete a minimum of 1,800 hours of additional on-the-job training and are certified with a national Red Seal certificate upon successful completion of the final exam.
Minimum Requirements
Participants in the Power Line Technician Apprenticeship Program must have a High School Diploma with Alberta grade 12 math and grade 12 English, or equivalent.
Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Program
FortisAlberta supports the professional development of our new engineers through an individualized Engineer-In-Training (EIT) program which enables recent engineering graduates to gain the professional requirements and practical experience required to achieve their Professional Engineer (P. Eng) status. As part of the program, FortisAlberta assigns a Professional Engineer to each EIT to ensure that the assigned work meets the P. Eng development requirements, while supporting the EIT’s individual interests and development goals.
Participants may also have the opportunity to work at other locations in the Fortis group of companies to provide an enhanced understanding of different electrical systems and opportunities to travel within Canada including Newfoundland & Labrador, Ontario, British Columbia, and Prince Edward Island, and the Caribbean, including Belize, the Cayman Islands and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Placements
FortisAlberta EITs have the opportunity to circulate through a number of departments including:
- Distribution Planning
- Engineering
- Market Development
- Operations Processes
