10 Important reminders about electrical safety for Albertans

Top 10 Things to Remember:

  1. Look up if you are driving a truck or big equipment. Stay at least 7 metres away from power lines at all times unless FortisAlberta has given you permission to get any closer.
  2. Always call before you dig: Alberta One-Call can be reached at 1-800-242-3447.
  3. Don’t play electrician – electrical work needs to be done safely and correctly in order to avoid shock, fire or electrocution.
  4. Keep up-to-date with first aid and electrical hazard training if you are on the job site.
  5. Stay in your vehicle – if you come in contact with downed power lines. If you must get out of your vehicle, jump away from the scene with your feet together.
  6. Watch those trees – be careful pruning, as a wire could be hidden in the branches.
  7. Don’t locate large haystacks or plant trees under power lines.
  8. Be careful when working on your house with a ladder, extended paint roller or any other device that might fall into the power line.
  9. Teach your children to be safe – don’t let them fly kites or climb trees near power lines or play around substations or green ‘boxes’.
  10. Everyone should be careful operating appliances near water in the kitchen and bathroom. Dry your hands before operating appliances and electronics.
