FortisAlberta enables generators to connect to the distribution system and completes the physical work involved with the connection.
If you choose to be a distributed generator, you will need to work with FortisAlberta to ensure that your generator is connected and operated in a safe manner, that the reliability of the distribution system is not compromised and that other customers are not negatively affected.
Reasons for installing a generator vary. For example, some customers:
- Use a generator for commercial purposes
- Want a generator for emergency or back-up purposes
- Enjoy generating green power for environmental reasons
- Want to offset electrical bills
- Produce enough electricity to sell the potential excess power back to the grid
Getting help with your distributed generation project
Searching for information relating to the type and style of generator you are considering is your responsibility. There are a number of businesses that can assist you with your generation project; however, FortisAlberta does not provide references for suppliers, contractors, energy consultants or electrical contractors. The costs and timelines to complete a project will vary based on its complexity and other factors.
Parties involved in distributed generation projects
In addition to FortisAlberta, there are three other regulated organizations who will be involved in your distributed generation project: the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC), the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO), and a Retailer, which is the company who provides your electricity bill.
About net billing
FortisAlberta offers net billing to micro-generation customers. Net billing requires two detented meters (or one detented bi-directional meter) that physically prevent the meter from running backwards and are required to accurately measure a customer's electricity. One meter measures the electricity a customer uses from the grid and the other measures the electricity that is delivered back to the grid. The monthly bill is based on the net difference between the two measurements.
