Underground Residential Development (URD) Turnkey Process

FortisAlberta is committed to working with developers and their contractors to plan, develop and install the underground electrical power requirements within new residential subdivisions in our service area.

The Turnkey Process provides a safe and reliable method for electrical installation in new subdivisions, using a broad base of resources and making market choice available for developers. The information and procedures available here facilitate:

  • Adequate electrical system design, protection, installation and customer servicing.
  • Proper planning, coordination, scheduling and orderly development with respect to contractors, municipal authorities and requirements, and other utilities, builders, and homeowners.
  • Compliance with the Alberta Electrical and Communication Utility Code under the Alberta Safety Codes Act and accepted FortisAlberta utility practices.

The Underground Residential Development (URD) Turnkey Process is an Engineer, Procure and Construct (EPC) process with the developer of a new subdivision for the installation of electrical facilities within the boundaries of the subdivision, similar to the way in which the deep and other surface utilities are installed.

Our Turnkey Process is simply an alternative contractual arrangement with the developer to obtain all of the electrical facilities under one contract, rather than the separate contractual agreements that FortisAlberta previously maintained with developers, material suppliers, engineering firms, joint-use suppliers, and construction contractors.

The Turnkey Process allows FortisAlberta to deliver safe, reliable electrical service while providing the Developer with more control over the cost, scheduling and coordination of the installation.
